CULTURAL QUES ANSW NEW 16

Dear friends

This cultural question answer is mostly of general nature, Here too a sorting out is made to arrange the Question answers of a special nature in a sequence.

Q1 Do the name of Lord Ayyappa is mentioned in Vedas or Puranas ?

A1 Lord Ayyappa is not mentioned in Puranas but Sasta, a synonym of Ayyappa, is in a Vedic hymn, as the killer of Jalandhara.

There is mention about Bhoothanatha/ Sastha in Brahmapurana and the name of Sasta occurs in Mahabharata also

Researches done in the history of south Indian rituals and religions unveil the fact that Ayyan and Amman are the two most venerated deities of the ancient Dravidians

Q2 Is there any prominent temple where Iyer priest do pooja in Kerala ?

A2 Yes . There is one . It is of Uralikavvu (where Roudra Kali is worshipped) near Wadakancheri, Trichur District.

Q3 In which place we have a Hanuman temple where the Lord is in Lying and Relaxing pose after Burning Lanka?

A3 It is in Allahabad Triveni sangamam. Invariably who ever go for Gaya sraadha, worship here after rituals and bath at Triveni .

Q4 It is told Viswanatha temple in Kalpathy is said to be very old. How many years before it was built?

A4 It is approximated that the temple was built 700 years ago.

Q5 How Cheraman perumal of Kerala is connected with Palani Muruga temple in Tamilnadu?

A5 In the temple at Palani, (built by a Chera king-inscriptions are there) the lord Murugan faces the West - the legend is that the Chera king wanted Muruga to face towards his kingdom.

Q6 What is Soma soothra?

A6 In a Siva temple we tread 3/4ths of the circle, till we reach the western bank of the little stream, which flows out of the temple TOWARDS THE NORTH. This stream is called Somasoothra,

My note-I was not knowing the name of the outlet earlier as soma soothra.

Q7 Why do Nampoothries perform worship in Kerala temples?

A7. Temple worship in Kerala is more Tantra based than Manthra. The Brahmins who migrated from Tamilandu were not experts in this form of worship and were therefore denied the posts of priests in all the temples managed by the Kerala Society. Now too most of the prominent temples have thanthries from Nampoothiri families.

My note-A number of Tulu Brahmins called Pottis are there in worship in Kerala temples. In my native and near sastha temple for a long time , it s Tulu potties performing worship. Some times they are chief, some times assistant.

Q8 Do there was resistance and some rivalry between Nampoothiries and Tamil Brahmins.

A8 There was some initial resistance from Nampoothries for accepting Tamil Brahmins on migration . The main worships in the temple were authoritative to them only.

Later they were gradually absorbed to holding oalakkuda(Palm leaf umbrella) for the deity etc during sreebali. In fact in our local temple it was our family given the job of taking the kuda behind the deity. I have taken the oalakkuda which was very heavy as a boy to hold with the handle about six feet.

The rivalry is a THING OF PAST. Now they are very close with Tamil Brahmins.

In my house it is a near by nampoothiri performing Ganapathi homam for a long time.

Q 9 Do there any legends accepting Tamil Brahmin woman as wife or Tamil brhamin as priest by Nampoothiries

A9.There is a story that Mezhattor Agnihotri, the Namboothiri member of Parachi Petta Pandeeruvar married a Brahmin girl from Thanjavur.

There is also a story that a Namboothiri household accepted Uddanda Sasthrikals as a priest.

Q10 How Tamil Brahmins were called in old Land records?

A10 Tamil Brahmins in Kerala were called Paradesi Brahmins in old land records.

My note- Even in my school admission in 1950's religion was given as Hindu, mother tongue as Tamil and caste as TAMIL BRAHMIN. Paradesi was used still earlier

Q11 What is the period of Bhasa

A11 Bhasa, the author of Swapna Vasavadatta is supposed to have lived near Trivandrum. There are reasons to believe that he was a Tamil Brahmin but certainly no proof. If this is accepted then the migration of Tamil Iyers to Kerala may be before 800 years.

My note – I have taken this QA that Bhasa, the author of swapana vasava datha is a Brahmin.

Q12 What is the story of Guru Raghavendrar got back the dimond garland from the fire?

A12 Once Raghavendrar was doing Yagas as requested by Chola king and got rain in the dried lands. Pleased with , chola king offered Raghavendrar a diamond chain

But Raghavendrar put the chain in the Yaga Agni. The Raja got disappointed seeing the hereditary chain was put on Agni. Feeling the disappointment of king Raghavendra prayed to Agni deva. The chain came out more glittering and Raghavendra gave it back to the king

Q13 When did Sreekrishna removed the leaves after taking food by the guests and cleaned with cowdung for the next row to take food?

A13 Sree krishna did so during the rajasuya performed by Yudhishtira. This rajasuya is after the great Mahabharatha war and Yudhishthira was crowned as King of Hasthina pura.

Q14 Among the Pandava brothers one had perfect control over sleep .Name the Pandava

A14 He was Arjuna. He had full control over mind and hence on sleep. He could remain asleep for days or sleep all on a sudden

My note- if we can control mind sleep will be there as a routine. But mind will be wandering thinking on many things specially for the aged.

Q15 We know Aruntati was the most devoted and loyal woman (Pathi vrata) .Question- what is the meaning of Arundati?

A15 Rundati means the lady who inter fear- Arundati means the lady WHO DO NOT INTERFEAR. Arundati never used to interfear on her husband's matters

Q 16 How the interest on time deposits are calculated and given?

A 16 Time Deposits- This is much tricky. The time deposits are offered on the term and amount matrix. It is something similar to EXCEL WORK BOOK where the x access will be term and y axis will be amount. Based on this the interest will be calculated.

My note- Though it is in general now a day we find many banks offer for a deposit for 500 days @10% and deposit for 2 years @9%.(eg:- State bank of Travancore)

Q17 What is the thory behind Blue?

A17 One of the theories is that Vishnu, because of his association with water, is depicted blue; therefore all his incarnations including Krishna, are shown as such.

In Hinduism, persons who have depth of character and the capacity to fight evil are depicted as blue skinned.

The theory of the blue colouring of Krishna also goes to the fact that the Creator has given the maximum of blue to nature i.e. the sky, the oceans, the rivers and lakes .

Lord Krishna spent his life protecting humanity and destroying evil, hence he is colored blue.
