Q2 Do Maha bharatha advocate Poliyandri and polygamy?

A2 Yes is the answer. Thus the world of the Mahabharata very comfortably refers to polyandry (many husbands for one woman) as well as polygamy (many wives for one man).

Draupadi's had five husbands and all Pandava brothers including Dharma Puthra too had other wives.

Q3 How many wives Arjuna had?

A3 Three . Arjuna married the Naga Ulupi, the princess Chitrangada of Manipur and finally Krishna's sister Subhadra during this pilgrimage. And of course Droupadi the common wife
Q4 An interesting Question- Did Droupathi was co operative with other wives of Pandavas?

A4 A big no is the answer. In fact when Draupadi agreed to be the common wife, her condition was that she would share her household with no other woman. In other words, disregarding popular practice of the times, the Pandavas could not bring their other wives to Indraprastha.

Arjuna, however, succeeded in bringing one wife in. She was Krishna's sister, Subhadra.

And with a little advise from Krishna, she was able to trick her way into the household. Subhadra was the daughter of Balarama.

Q5 We have seen above that Panada brothers had other wives than Droupadi. What are their details?

A5 Yudhishtira married Devika, the daughter of Govasana of the Saivya tribe and begat upon her a son called Yaudheya.

Bhima married Valandhara, the daughter of the king of Kashi and begat upon her a son named Sarvaga.

Nakula married Karenumati, the princess of Chedi, and begat upon her a son named Niramitra.

Sahadeva obtained Vijaya, the daughter of Dyutimat, the king of Madra and begat upon her a son named Suhotra.

As already told Arjuna married Ulupi and Subhadra . Abhimanyu was the son born to Subhadra.

All these wives lived with their sons in the house of their fathers.

Q6 Among the Pandava brothers who was the first got married?

A6 In fact, the first brother to get married was not Arjuna or the eldest Yudhishtira, but the mighty Bhima. After the Kauravas attempted to kill the Pandavas by setting alight their palace (made of lac) on fire, the Pandavas hid in the forest, disguised as the sons of a Brahmin widow.

During this time, Bhima killed many Rakshasas such as Baka and Hidimba. Hidimba's sister, Hidumbi , impressed by his strength, chose him as husband and they had a son called Ghatotkacha.

Q7 What is the importance of Banyan tree in Hinduism?

A7 In Hinduism, the leaf of banyan tree is said to be the resting place for the God Krishna, who, after consuming all the universe during the time of destruction, absorbs everything created and turns himself to a child as small as he could fit into the tiny leaf of the banyan tree and keeps floating in the void space, until he himself decides to recreate everything back out from him. In Hinduism, the banyan tree is considered sacred and is called "Vat Vriksha."

God Shiva as Dakshinamurthy is nearly always depicted sitting in silence under the banyan with rishis at his feet.
Also in Hindu culture, the banyan tree is also called kalpavriksha meaning 'wish fulfilling divine tree'.

Elsewhere in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says:

Of all trees I am the banyan tree, and of the sages among the demigods I am Narada. Of the Gandharvas I am Citraratha, and among perfected beings I am the sage Kapila.(10.26)

Q8 Do ghee is preferred to oil for lighting the lamp?

A8 The ghee lamp is more sattvik (spiritually pure) and has more capacity to attract the sattvik vibrations present in the surrounding atmosphere as compared to oil lamp.

The oil lamp can attract sattvik vibrations spread over a maximum distance of 1 meter while the ghee lamp can attract sattvik vibrations spread till Swarga Lok (heaven).

When the oil lamp stops burning the predominance of raja particles in the atmosphere is enhanced and lasts for half an hour whereas when the ghee lamp stops burning the impact of sattvikta on the atmosphere is experienced even after four hours.

Q9 : Botanical science tells us that plants also-have life. Then where lays the difference between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food?

A9 There are two kinds of life on earth, animate and inanimate. Men, beasts, birds, fish etc. are animate life while trees and other plants are inanimate life.

Fruits ripen on the trees and then fall of by themselves, branches and leaves may be chopped off a tree and new one arises in theirplace.

Many plants are propagated by their cuttings. Others can be transplanted. But all this is not possible with birds and animals.

No limb of an animal can grow by itself after cutting. Man cannot produce his own offsprings or other animals like plants from earth.

All the living beings are made up of five elements - the earth, water, fire, air and sky. All these five are present in man clearly and predominantly.

Only four elements - earth, water, fire and air are predominant in animals.
While in birds only three air, water and fire are predominant.

Two elements - earth and fire - make up the insects.

And only one element of water is predominant in fruits, leaves and vegetables etc.

The rest four elements are in sleeping state in vegetables and plants.

Therefore, eating vegetable foods consumes the minimum of factors.

Saints and Sages do not pluck fruits from the trees, but they eat only those fruits which have fallen by themselves on ripening.

Minimum damage to life is the basic criterion. There is no harm in obtaining fruits from trees but harm lies in their cutting.

Q10 Do Chanakya advise people not tobe very honesty?

A10 Here are a few chanakya quotes.

"A person should not be too honest.
Straight trees are cut first And Honest people are screwed first."

Q14 Why is it customary to exchange Betel leaves on important occasions? Why do we offer betel leaves to God during worship?

A14 Every betel leaf has an innate quality that we may not be aware of. There is a herb known as 'Pathala Bhairavi' which can nurture enimity between two individuals. There are herbs that can transform Iron into Gold. Some herbs can bestow wealth. We even find descriptions about herbs that can make a man disappear.

Likewise, betel leaves possess the unique property of nurturing love between two persons. In those days, betel leaves were exchanged at the time of registrations, engagements and wedding as a sigh of love and tryst.

It is believed that relationships such as Husband-wife, devotee-God are fortified by betel leaves. This explains why betel leaves constitute an integral part of worship.

Infact, a monk who has renounced all worldly relationship is forbidden for taking betel leaves because he should not develop worldly attachment or bondage. Adapted from Answer by Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

Q15 Where do we have the great Banyan tree in the world? What are its details?

A15 The Great Banyan is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India.

It was the widest tree in the world in terms of the area of the canopy and is estimated to be about 200 to 250 years old.

It became diseased after it was struck by lightning, so in 1925 the middle of the tree was excised to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree. A 330 meter long road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues to spread beyond it.

The Great Banyan tree is is the largest known in India, perhaps in Asia. There is no clear history of the tree, but it is mentioned in some travel books of the nineteenth century.

It was damaged by two great cyclones in 1884 and 1886, when some of its main branches were broken and exposed to the attack of a hard fungus.

With its large number of aerial roots, The Great Banyan looks more like a forest than an individual tree. The tree now lives without its main trunk, which decayed and was removed in 1925.
