lavakusa temple at koyampedu,chennai
Lava and Kusa sons of Lord Rama fight with their father with out knowing their relationship. Rama is also unaware that they are his sons. Valmiki who was in tapas learns about the battle and rushed to the spot. He reveals the identity of Rama to Lava and Kusa.
The brothers become sad and wail loudly about their plight. They feel that some curse might befall them and ruin their lives as they have fought with their father. They want to make themselves holy and perform pooja which will nullify the wrath.
Thus Valmiki asks Lava and Kusa to enshrine a Siva Lingam at the place where they fought. The brothers obediently enshrine a Siva Lingam and worship the Lord. He is called Kusalavapureeswarar as he is installed by Lava and Kusa. There is a popular belief that worshipping the deity will nullify Pithru Dosha. People from far off places flock to the temple to perform pooja to ward off Pithru Dosha.
Lord Rama installed a Siva Lingam at Rameswaram and his sons at Koyambedu.
There is an image of Sarabeswarar sculpted at one of the pillars in a mantap outside the temple. Devotees throng the temple during Rahu kalam on Sundays to worship Sarabeeswarar. The divine congregation comprises of the presiding deity his consort -Aramvalartha Nayaki also called Dharmasamvardhini, Subramanya, Valli, Devasena, Nataraja , Surya and Chandran.
There is another temple adjoining this temple called Vaikuntavasa Perumal temple where the icons of Lava, Kusa, Valmiki and the expectant Sita pose effulgently. Devotees should visit this temple also.
The temple is near Koyambedu mofussil bus terminus.
